Kathryn Staron
CPDT-KA
Trainer

Kathryn Staron is a certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA) whose approach is firmly rooted in building strong, trust-based relationships between dogs and their human families. She emphasizes open, two-way communication and sees dog training as the process of learning a new language—one she enjoys decoding alongside her clients. Her sessions are guided by empathy, clarity, and a deep understanding of behavior, with the goal of developing confident dogs who feel secure and understood in their homes.
With extensive hands-on experience spanning local animal shelters, private training, group instruction, boarding, fostering, and behavior coaching, Kathryn brings both skill and compassion to every interaction. Her approach reduces household stress while helping dogs and their caregivers develop lasting bonds based on mutual respect and cooperation.
Kathryn is committed to lifelong learning and continues to advance her knowledge of canine behavior through ongoing education, professional collaboration, and coursework. She believes in the power of engaging a dog’s mind and tailors each session to be both enriching and enjoyable. Her training philosophy is rooted in science-based, humane methods that prioritize fun, effective outcomes.
Kathryn’s journey into dog training began in 2017 with the arrival of Charlie, a reactive adolescent Border Collie. Confronted with behavior challenges she didn’t yet know how to address, she turned to A Sound Beginning and began working with mentor Steve Frost. The transformation she witnessed—not only in Charlie, but in the dynamics of her entire household—was both profound and inspiring. This experience sparked a deep commitment to helping other families overcome similar challenges and nurture stronger, more harmonious relationships with their dogs. Kathryn is continually fascinated by the art of training and the powerful connection between canine behavior and human psychology.
Outside of her professional work, Kathryn most enjoys gardening and sharing plants, photography, reading, spin classes, exploring Michigan’s beaches with her three teenage daughters (and her reluctant husband), and traveling to Colorado whenever she can. Her favorite pastime is walking with Charlie, celebrating the ongoing progress they’ve made together. Some day, she hopes to find time to paint or draw again.
